Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand will collaborate on the production of M4 assault rifles.
Government of Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand plan to conduct collaborative production of the M4 type rifle attacker. This collaboration will become the motor of a similar collaboration will be conducted in all ASEAN countries.
This was conveyed by Minister of Defense of Malaysia, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, a news conference in Jakarta, Friday, May 20, 2011. He said the attacker M4 rifle production that will replace the M15 rifle this will be the product of collaboration of ASEAN countries first.
This collaboration is the armament industry development plan proposed in Asean Defence Ministerial meeting of ASEAN Ministers (ADMM) in Jakarta yesterday.
"This is the first project and a pioneer of projects that will come," said Hamidi.
Hamidi said that this defense is a project collaboration of government, but in its implementation will work with the private sector. Malaysia itself, said Hamidi, has appointed a company that is ready to do projects that cost up to U.S. $ 200 million (Rp1, 7 trillion) per country.
The determination of when the project will begin set at a meeting between the companies in question states that will be done in the near future. Workmanship, clear Hamidi, is by way of procurement of components from the three countries and worked in Indonesia.
However, it is possible ASEAN countries to join the others sell components in this project.
"For this year's production may be between 20,000 to 50,000 barrel of a gun," said Hamidi.
Collaboration of this kind, Hamidi said, would save defense spending for countries in ASEAN are entirely spent approximately U.S. $ 25 billion (Rp213 trillion). This is because, the funds normally used to import weapons from outside the region will rotate in Southeast Asia alone.
"Savings can be up to U.S. $ 12.5 billion, and in 2030 our target is a saving of up to 50 percent," he said. (Eh)
